Cheryl Holloway Celebrates Juneteenth

Banner Header_2016

Google News         Fox News Logo

I recently attended a Juneteenth Celebration in Maryland.

Here is some History of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, and more generally the emancipation of African American  slaves throughout the Confederate South. Celebrated on June 19, the word is a portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth.” Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in forty-five states.

Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years.  Any of these stories could be true.

  • Often told is the story of a messenger, who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom.
  • Another story is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers/masters to maintain the labor force on the plantations.
  • Another story is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, the holiday is observed primarily in local celebrations. Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation the singing of traditional songs, such as “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the Black American National Anthem, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,”  an American Negro Spiritual and readings by noted African-American writers, such as Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou.  Celebrations may include parades, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties,  historical reenactments, or Miss Juneteenth contests.

Note: Special Thanks to Wikipedia.org and Juneteenth.com for the history.

Cheryl Holloway Celebrates Women’s History Month 2017

Banner Header_2016

Google NewsFox News Logo

March is Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month began as a Women’s History Week, originally held the week of March 7, 1982. In 1987, Congress changed the week to a full month of commemoration.

Although many of the accomplishments and contributions of women have been lost from the history books, women have played a vital role in the course of human civilization. From raising families to leading armies, women have made untold contributions to history.

Women have always worked, but often their work has been undervalued and unpaid.

International Women’s Day

Many countries, including the United States, also celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, which began in 1911. After the 1914 celebration and push for equality, the day has become an annual staple for global awareness around women’s issues.

Here is Her Story about just a few Women in History

Nancy Woodhull was a founding editor at USA TODAY and worked to redefine how women are covered in the news.

Helen Keller, blind and deaf, and Anne Sullivan, her teacher and life-long friend. Sullivan helped Keller become the first blind-deaf person to graduate from college, and the pair advocated for people with disabilities.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the six-time Olympic medalist, is considered one of the world’s greatest female athletes and holds the world record in the heptathlon.

Graciela Olivarez is the first woman and Latina graduate from Notre Dame Law School. She fought for Mexican-American rights and worked to decrease poverty.

Tammy Duckworth is the first disabled woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the second Asian-American woman in the Senate.

Simone Biles is the most decorated American gymnast, winning four gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin was published and became the best-selling book of the 19th century.

Gloria Steinem became a leader of “second wave” feminism and remains one today.

Margaret Butler was the first female fellow at the American Nuclear Society and advocated for women in science and math fields.

Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Julia Ward Howe and Sojourner Truth, among others, organize The National Council of Women of the U.S., the oldest American non-sectarian women’s organization.

Well, I’m outta here, I don’t have to blog, if I don’t want to blog.

Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday and Remembering Others

Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday

Every year, I want to celebrate MLK’s birthday by doing something different. So, this year is no different. I thought about his question, “What are you doing for others?”  Of course, I pay it forward to other authors, but I thought, What else can I do?

I thought about his March on Washington and I decided to join the 2017 Women’s March on Washington on January 21. You already know what the march is about and I don’t need to add anything.

I have been an activist for many years, and I presume I will always be one-it’s part of me and my legacy.

Please enjoy your holiday and remember others in history—past and present.

Cheryl Holloway Celebrates Veterans Day 2016

Banner Header_2016

Google News         Fox News Logo

Veterans day

Veterans Day Celebrates the Service of All U.S. Military Veterans

On Veterans Day, put out your flags, cheer the marchers at parades, and go to tributes. But when you wake up the next day, Nov. 12, remember that it’s still Veterans Day for our veterans — and it will be every day of their lives.                                                 — Gen. Colin L. Powell, (Ret.)

If you know me, then you know that I am from a military family (several generations), and that I support the military all year long.  I am a firm believer…“Supporting Veterans Shouldn’t Only Happen on Veterans Day.”

Be reminded of the sacrifices military men and women in our country make and that for a combat veteran, the fight doesn’t end when the war does.

I think it’s critical that we’re giving back to our veterans. And remember that they need our help and recognition all year long, not just on Veterans Day.

So, there is no better way to appreciate veterans than to give back. If you can’t give back to them personally, give to an organization that supports veterans. Some organizations that help military vets and military families are Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion, Vietnam Vets of America and Wounded Warriors. A new organization seems to appear with each new generation of military vets. So, I’m asking that you do your best to support at least one organization.

Thanks Vets

On this Veterans Day I ask, “What have you been doing to support our troops?”

God Bless our men and women in service—their dedication will never be forgotten.                                                                   ~Cheryl Holloway

Happy Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Banner Header_2016

Google News         Fox News Logo

Happy Holiday!

columbus-day

Did you know that Colorado refocused Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

Colorado was the first state in the U.S. to celebrate Columbus Day in 1906. It became a Federal holiday in 1937 to mark Christopher Columbus’ 1492 voyage to the Western Hemisphere.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates indigenous natives who lived on the North American continent long before European explorers set foot here.

It has been reported and critics argue that devoting a day to Columbus is not only misleading, but celebrates a violent history of colonialism, enslavement and discrimination.

It makes sense to refocus the holiday, because there are over 100 Native American tribes in the Colorado area.

Hmmm…Something to think about.

Let me know, what you think.

Cheryl Holloway Wishes A Happy Father’s Day to All the Fans/Readers Near and Far

Banner Header_2016

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father’s Day to…all my family, friends and readers near and far!

May you enjoy today with your father and may all the father’s enjoy the day with their children and grandchildren.  Enjoy your many Blessings.

This year I’ve written a Father’s Day fictional short story. I hope you enjoy it.

Note: This short story is dedicated to my closest family members who served in various branches of the Military—my brother, William Holloway; my nephew (his son), Kenneth Holloway; my uncle, John McCaa, all former Military members. Deceased family members—my father, Willie Holloway;  my ex-husband, Samuel Robinson; and my uncle, George Britt.

A Military Father’s Day Gift

Kenny had been in the Army for almost ten years and was looking forward to leave on Father’s Day Weekend with his wife and kids.

A few days prior to the weekend, a terrorist gunman fired into a crowd of parade attendees and killed twenty people and wounded 15 other innocent bystanders. The terrorist disappeared after fleeing the location.

The military was called in to help the small state’s National Guard.  Kenny’s leave was cancelled.

His wife and kids were very disappointed, since they had planned a big family breakfast for him and other family members on Father’s Day Morning. Much to their frustration, the family decided to continue the celebration without Kenny.

Kenny and his squad were more determined than ever to find the terrorist…as soon as possible.  They were on a 24/7 mission. The squad finally located the terrorist on Friday morning. The terrorist was shot dead after a quick shootout.  Kenny and his squad felt good now that they had accomplished their mission.

The Commander lifted the leave restraint. Kenny called his wife and they decided to surprise everyone.

Kenny had been flying all night and was exhausted. But he got a new burst of energy and felt so blessed when he saw his wife, kids and family on Father’s Day Morning!

THE END

Flag and soldiers.

Happy Father’s Day to the Military.

I thank God for the many Blessings in my life. May you have a Happy & Blessed Father’s Day!
