On Apr 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on the balcony of room 306 at the Lorraine Motel at 6:01 pm, and he was pronounced dead at 7:05 pm at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Many American people were upset over the assassination of Dr. King. There were riots across the country as the news of his death spread. Dr. King advocated justice for all people.

A Historic Anniversary – It’s been 50 years since his death.

Yet, the United States of America is still struggling with racism!

Cheryl Holloway Discusses How to Improve Your Writing Skills

How to Improve Your Writing Skills

There’s good news and bad news when it comes to improving your writing skills.

The bad news is writing can often times be very intimidating to people who don’t write on a regular basis. However, the good news is that any writer can improve their writing skills with a little discipline and with a little eagerness to learn. Here are some of my tips.

Learn the Basics of Grammar and Writing

  • Take a writing class at your local college or a writing workshop by a well-known author in your city. From time to time, I teach Writing Workshops from coast to coast. So, if I’m in your area, check me out!
  • Buy some General Writing Guides – Every writer should have a copy of The Elements of Style by Strunk and White on their book shelf for general writing. I would also suggest a Manual of Style (a guide for authors and editors), such as Chicago Manual of Style or New York Times Manual of Style. Some other writing book suggestions are Bird by Bird by Ann Lamott; On Writing by Stephen King; and Stein on Writing by Sol Stein. If all else fails, try Writing Fiction for Dummies. Surprisingly, it has good writing information in it.

  • Buy a good book on how to write in your genre. Romance, Sci-Fi, Mystery/Thriller, etc. Years ago, I had a really good book on How to Write Romance Stories. I told many romance authors about it and loaned it to a few authors. Well, my book eventually disappeared. Now, it’s out of print. (Note: If you stole my book, please return it!)

Read to enhance your writing.

  • The best writers are avid readers, and surprisingly reading on a regular basis is an easy way to start enhancing your own writing skills. I used to read a book a day, but in recent years I have slowed down on the number of books I read daily.
  • Expand your reading to more challenging books. Don’t just read the same author or genre all the time—diversify your reading material. Note: Read 2 or 3 books on the best sellers list and open your eyes to new authors.
  • While reading other authors, pay attention to how they write: sentence structure; use of synonyms, antonyms, and adjectives; word choices; descriptions; character developments; transitions; showing versus telling; and how the story flows. This will be extremely helpful to you as a writer.

Develop your own style.

  • Discover your own “voice”through trial and error.
  • Analyze famous writers by imitating (not duplicating) their writing style.
  • Try various elements from a variety of your favorite authors and create your own style of

Write with a passion.

  • Write regularly and consistently. By now, you should know my saying, “Writers write.”

Review your writing.

  • Every 3 months Review your earlier work and see how you’ve grown. Note: Read something you wrote five years ago and you will laugh at your naiveté in early writing.

My last tip is easy—continue writing and continue growing.

Overcoming Self-Doubt by Cheryl Holloway

Banner Header_2016

Google News         Fox News Logo

Overcoming Self-Doubt

Self-doubt feels overwhelming from time-to-time and when you are                  experiencing self-doubt writing seems almost impossible. The bad news is it doesn’t go away. The good news is you can manage it with a few tricks. It’s just like writers block…you have to know what to do in order to move on.

Can you imagine Stephen King, the bestselling author of countless books, having self-doubt? He once said in an interview, “I’m afraid of failing at whatever story I’m writing – that it won’t come up for me, or that I won’t be able to finish it.” So, you see we all have self-doubt. Sometimes, it causes greater anxiety than other times, but it is still on our minds as a writer. I think if an author like Stephen King has self-doubt, then obviously it must be part of the creative process.

You ask yourself, “Who Am I?” If you’ve never published anything, you say, “I’m a writer, not an author.” If you have published something, you say, “I have only published __  (fill in the blank) books. Do readers really know who I am? Hell, no. So, who do I think I am? Certainly, not a writer!”

Well, here are some of my tips:

  1. Get rid of the negative self-talk and replace it with positive motivational talk. “I am a writer.” “I am an author!”
  2. Take a break. Get up from your computer or laptop. Leave the fear behind. Walk around. Exercise. Go to lunch. Clear your mind. Then, get back to writing. Put some words on that blank page. Continue with your writing. Write because it’s your passion.
  3. Face it, everybody cannot and will not like your writing. Some will hate it, while others will love it—mostly your friends and especially, your mom. Write for those who will love it.

James Patterson has written 75+ books I’m sure he had self-doubt at some point in time and thought, Do I deserve this? These accolades? These awards? All of this money? LOL I wish I had that problem.

Anyway, move on and Keep Writing because…we’ve all been there and done that!

Cheryl Holloway Says, “Find Your Niche and Pay It Forward!”

Find Your Niche and Pay It Forward

Anyone can pay it forward with time and services and your actions can make a world of difference to someone. So, I firmly believe in paying it forward to others—mostly strangers.  I have been faithfully doing this for almost twenty years.  Yesterday, we celebrated National Random Acts of Kindness Day.

When I was trying to promote one of my self-published books in the early 2000’s I had a hard time finding free or inexpensive advertising.  So, I created an internet radio talk show, Just About Books Talk Show, to provide author interviews to other authors at no charge.  I had the show for six or seven years. Well, life happens, and I took a hiatus for a few years. When I decided to start again, I created my blog in 2013 and I pay it forward with Guest Author Interviews—once again at no charge. Many people have told me that I should charge for my services, but God put it on my heart decades ago to pay it forward and I do. My acts of kindness have been appreciated by all kinds of authors—indie, traditionally published, self-published, well-known, celebrities and unknown.

Cheryl Holloway says, “Find your niche, provide a random act of kindness and pay it forward!”

Black History Month is throughout the month of February,

From February 1-28, I will spotlight various books, facts, information and quotes for Black History Month. I am planning some interesting blog posts.

Today’s Black History info is Six African American Movies that you should see to learn about some of our heroes and some of our history.

“Glory” (1989) – about a Union Army during the Civil War that was made up solely of African American soldiers.

“Malcolm X” (1992) – about Malcolm X and his role as a Black activist and the legacy he left behind after he was assassinated in 1965.

“Ali” (2001)about Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay), an American professional boxer and activist, who faced difficult circumstances.

“12 Years a Slave” (2013) –  about Solomon Northup, and his life as a free man who was sold into slavery in the South and the cruelty he endured from his owner.

“Selma” (2014) – about the 1965 march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

“Hidden Figures” (2016) – about three African American women who helped with the launch of astronaut John Glenn.

By the way, I’ve seen all of these movies. Have you?

New Beginnings Start When You Find Yourself at A Dead End by Cheryl Holloway

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

New Beginnings Start When You Find Yourself at A Dead End

Fact: Sooner or later, everyone hits a dead end.

Have you ever had a dream of becoming an author? Then, you realize that it’s just not going to happen. That is a dead end “writing” dream.

Usually in life, when we reach a dead end, we turn around to take another route.

One of the best times for figuring out what you truly want is right after you hit a dead end… you have to let go of what you can’t change.

Why? Because it is what it is.

Let’s discuss this in writing terms…After you’ve hit a dead end, you need to move on by turning the page. The dead end you’ve just experienced is not THE END. It’s time for your “writing” dream to begin again in a new and different way—new goals. You’re at a point in your story where one chapter makes a smooth transition into the next chapter. This allows you to re-write or edit your story and make progress to the final chapter.

When you reach a dead end, you have to do 3 things:

  1. Accept it.
  2. Learn from it. AND…
  3. Move on.

Fact: A dead end is really a new beginning.

You need to build and grow something new…now.

What matters is what you choose to do from this point on. Now, is the time to take your next step or to take some action.  There’s always room for a new idea, a new step…a new beginning (dah). One last thought…Are you stuck in a dead end? Can this dead end be turned into a new beginning?

We all have a choice to make…What will yours be?

Seven Sentence Sunday by Cheryl Holloway

Seven Sentence Sunday

Once Upon a Time

Most of my blog readers and followers enjoy Seven Sentence Sunday and often request the short stories.

I write a short story using only seven sentences. I also use this as a writing exercise in the writing workshops that I present.

In the news recently were a couple of cases of childhood suicide—related to bullying. I sincerely hope that bullying can be stopped before it reaches the point of suicide.

Fact: Childhood and adolescent bullying is recognized as a major public health problem in the Western world, and it appears to be associated with suicidality.

Here is a short story of a smart student who won’t be bullied ever—again.

Title: End Bullying!

  1. The tall, overweight “dumb” guy in class began bullying his tiny, but smart female classmate.
  2. She wondered why he chose to pick on her, because she was quiet and kept to herself and her studies.
  3. He was BIG—boisterous, ignorant and gullible.
  4. She was SMART—studious, marvelous, articulate, resourceful, and technical.
  5. He made her cry in private, then she became depressed and finally, she vowed to never let him bully her again.
  6. So, she used her intellect and embarrassed him in front of all of his friends.
  7. The bullying ended when he cried like a big baby in public—in the school cafeteria.

The End…hopefully. 🙂

Have a Great Writing Day!

5 Reasons Writers Procrastinate by Cheryl Holloway

Don’t Let Procrastination Steal Another Year…Write Your Book, Now!

If you want to be a writer, here are some serious questions for you to think about.

Are you are in danger of letting procrastination take yet another of your opportunities?

What is procrastination?

According to the dictionary, procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing something.

Why do writers procrastinate?

Here are my top five reasons why writers procrastinate and don’t finish writing their book.

  1. They don’t believe that their writing is good. I think this is the number one reason writers procrastinate. Everyone doubts themselves at one time or another, especially a writer who has never been published before.
  2. They don’t allot time to write each and every day. I think this is the number two reason writers procrastinate. Remember…writers write.
  3. They don’t make attainable goals. I think this is the number three reason writers procrastinate. Give yourself deadlines to help you meet goals and keep you writing daily. Set a daily writing goal that is small and attainable. Note: 250 words a day is about one page. If you write one page a day for one year (365 days), you will have a complete book. Now, you’re ready to organize and edit it. 🙂
  4. They have too many distractions. I think this is the number four reason writers procrastinate. They read their emails (on several accounts), visit social media sites (such as facebook and twitter), and search the internet (google anything and everything). If you are serious about writing a book, you need two things—a quiet space and a designated time.
  5. They are not accountable to anyone. I think this is the number five reason writers procrastinate. Get a writing buddy that you are accountable to and vice versa. It will help you stay on track with your writing. I am an Accountability Writing Coach. You pay me to keep you on track. I am your writing mentor, who encourages you and supports you—even at your lowest point.

Here are some facts:

In the U.S., 82% of people say they want to write a book, but only 2% actually write a book.

Of the writers who are bold enough to start writing a book, only 3 in 5 writers actually finish writing the book.

Jan 1st is an opportunity to fulfill your dream of writing a book.

But, before I go, let me leave you with a final thought: On writing your book…Where will you be this time next year?
