Cheryl Holloway Says, “Find Your Niche and Pay It Forward!”

Find Your Niche and Pay It Forward

Anyone can pay it forward with time and services and your actions can make a world of difference to someone. So, I firmly believe in paying it forward to others—mostly strangers.  I have been faithfully doing this for almost twenty years.  Yesterday, we celebrated National Random Acts of Kindness Day.

When I was trying to promote one of my self-published books in the early 2000’s I had a hard time finding free or inexpensive advertising.  So, I created an internet radio talk show, Just About Books Talk Show, to provide author interviews to other authors at no charge.  I had the show for six or seven years. Well, life happens, and I took a hiatus for a few years. When I decided to start again, I created my blog in 2013 and I pay it forward with Guest Author Interviews—once again at no charge. Many people have told me that I should charge for my services, but God put it on my heart decades ago to pay it forward and I do. My acts of kindness have been appreciated by all kinds of authors—indie, traditionally published, self-published, well-known, celebrities and unknown.

Cheryl Holloway says, “Find your niche, provide a random act of kindness and pay it forward!”

Black History Month is throughout the month of February,

From February 1-28, I will spotlight various books, facts, information and quotes for Black History Month. I am planning some interesting blog posts.

Today’s Black History info is Six African American Movies that you should see to learn about some of our heroes and some of our history.

“Glory” (1989) – about a Union Army during the Civil War that was made up solely of African American soldiers.

“Malcolm X” (1992) – about Malcolm X and his role as a Black activist and the legacy he left behind after he was assassinated in 1965.

“Ali” (2001)about Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay), an American professional boxer and activist, who faced difficult circumstances.

“12 Years a Slave” (2013) –  about Solomon Northup, and his life as a free man who was sold into slavery in the South and the cruelty he endured from his owner.

“Selma” (2014) – about the 1965 march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

“Hidden Figures” (2016) – about three African American women who helped with the launch of astronaut John Glenn.

By the way, I’ve seen all of these movies. Have you?

New Beginnings Start When You Find Yourself at A Dead End by Cheryl Holloway

New Beginnings Start When You Find Yourself at A Dead End

Fact: Sooner or later, everyone hits a dead end.

Have you ever had a dream of becoming an author? Then, you realize that it’s just not going to happen. That is a dead end “writing” dream.

Usually in life, when we reach a dead end, we turn around to take another route.

One of the best times for figuring out what you truly want is right after you hit a dead end… you have to let go of what you can’t change.

Why? Because it is what it is.

Let’s discuss this in writing terms…After you’ve hit a dead end, you need to move on by turning the page. The dead end you’ve just experienced is not THE END. It’s time for your “writing” dream to begin again in a new and different way—new goals. You’re at a point in your story where one chapter makes a smooth transition into the next chapter. This allows you to re-write or edit your story and make progress to the final chapter.

When you reach a dead end, you have to do 3 things:

  1. Accept it.
  2. Learn from it. AND…
  3. Move on.

Fact: A dead end is really a new beginning.

You need to build and grow something new…now.

What matters is what you choose to do from this point on. Now, is the time to take your next step or to take some action.  There’s always room for a new idea, a new step…a new beginning (dah). One last thought…Are you stuck in a dead end? Can this dead end be turned into a new beginning?

We all have a choice to make…What will yours be?

Seven Sentence Sunday by Cheryl Holloway

Seven Sentence Sunday

Once Upon a Time

Most of my blog readers and followers enjoy Seven Sentence Sunday and often request the short stories.

I write a short story using only seven sentences. I also use this as a writing exercise in the writing workshops that I present.

In the news recently were a couple of cases of childhood suicide—related to bullying. I sincerely hope that bullying can be stopped before it reaches the point of suicide.

Fact: Childhood and adolescent bullying is recognized as a major public health problem in the Western world, and it appears to be associated with suicidality.

Here is a short story of a smart student who won’t be bullied ever—again.

Title: End Bullying!

  1. The tall, overweight “dumb” guy in class began bullying his tiny, but smart female classmate.
  2. She wondered why he chose to pick on her, because she was quiet and kept to herself and her studies.
  3. He was BIG—boisterous, ignorant and gullible.
  4. She was SMART—studious, marvelous, articulate, resourceful, and technical.
  5. He made her cry in private, then she became depressed and finally, she vowed to never let him bully her again.
  6. So, she used her intellect and embarrassed him in front of all of his friends.
  7. The bullying ended when he cried like a big baby in public—in the school cafeteria.

The End…hopefully. 🙂

Thanks for reading this short story. Please give me some feedback and tell me what you think about the topic.

Have a Great Writing Day!

5 Reasons Writers Procrastinate by Cheryl Holloway

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

Don’t Let Procrastination Steal Another Year…Write Your Book, Now!

If you want to be a writer, here are some serious questions for you to think about.

Are you are in danger of letting procrastination take yet another of your opportunities?

What is procrastination?

According to the dictionary, procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing something.

Why do writers procrastinate?

Here are my top five reasons why writers procrastinate and don’t finish writing their book.

  1. They don’t believe that their writing is good. I think this is the number one reason writers procrastinate. Everyone doubts themselves at one time or another, especially a writer who has never been published before.
  2. They don’t allot time to write each and every day. I think this is the number two reason writers procrastinate. Remember…writers write.
  3. They don’t make attainable goals. I think this is the number three reason writers procrastinate. Give yourself deadlines to help you meet goals and keep you writing daily. Set a daily writing goal that is small and attainable. Note: 250 words a day is about one page. If you write one page a day for one year (365 days), you will have a complete book. Now, you’re ready to organize and edit it. 🙂
  4. They have too many distractions. I think this is the number four reason writers procrastinate. They read their emails (on several accounts), visit social media sites (such as facebook and twitter), and search the internet (google anything and everything). If you are serious about writing a book, you need two things—a quiet space and a designated time.
  5. They are not accountable to anyone. I think this is the number five reason writers procrastinate. Get a writing buddy that you are accountable to and vice versa. It will help you stay on track with your writing. I am an Accountability Writing Coach. You pay me to keep you on track. I am your writing mentor, who encourages you and supports you—even at your lowest point.

Here are some facts:

In the U.S., 82% of people say they want to write a book, but only 2% actually write a book.

Of the writers who are bold enough to start writing a book, only 3 in 5 writers actually finish writing the book.

Jan 1st is an opportunity to fulfill your dream of writing a book.

But, before I go, let me leave you with a final thought: On writing your book…Where will you be this time next year?

Cheryl Holloway Asks, “Have You Met Your Writing Goals for 2017?”

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

“Have You Met Your Writing Goals for 2017?”

Oh, no. You didn’t get that book written. And…you didn’t finish NaNoWriMo. You’ve fallen behind, and now, you’re beating yourself up…bad!

I know, you’re saying, “I missed my writing goals. I have no motivation. I can’t stay on a writing routine. Besides, it’s almost the end of the year. Why bother? I will do better next year.”

But…Why wait? Let’s get started now and you’ll be ahead of the writing game. You’ll be ready for those 2018 Writing Goals. No more excuses!

Three Simple Tips:

  1. Focus on 1 or 2 Writing Goals.
  2. Create a Simple Action Plan.
  3. Reward Yourself when you Finish a Weekly Goal.

My Suggestion: Instead of writing the whole book, try writing the outline for the book and maybe just writing the first chapter by December 31st with weekly goals that are doable. The rewards can be simple also, like buying that writing book at the used bookstore or a café latte at Starbucks ®.

Be grateful and thankful for what little progress you’ve made. After all, these are baby steps towards making your big goal happen!

Another Simple Tip to Stay on Track:

I would also suggest finding a writing buddy, who you are accountable to them and they are accountable to you. You will keep each other on track for your overall writing goals.

Get started today, don’t wait until January 1st!

If you like this blog post, share it with your friends. 🙂

Cheryl Holloway Presents A Reader’s Interview

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

A Reader’s Interview

I love getting to know my readers, so I put together a Reader’s Interview, so I can learn more about my readers and get their feedback on my current and future books. Ann, a devoted reader of my blog, was kind enough to allow me to share her thoughts with you, so here it is:

Which of my books is your favorite?

I loved the Cougar Tales Box Set, especially Jamaican Love. I also loved The Proposal: A Leap of Faith.  I might add, the ending took me by surprise. I recently read A Sisterhood of Women Living Life, Book 2. The preview story for Book 2, June’s Rainbow, was also a great story and I’m looking forward to more romance stories.

Which short story did you like most in A Sisterhood of Women Living Life?

All of the stories were a very exciting read, which keeps the reader attached to the story line until the last page. So, it would be hard to pick one story. But if I had to pick one, I’d say Dark Secrets and White Lies. It was a very unique story line.

What did you like least about that story?

I wanted it to go on, so I could know a little more about Maria’s future.

What do you like most about A Sisterhood of Women Living Life, Book 1?

Each story was very interesting and I felt like I knew the characters personally. I cried at times and yelled in victory at other times.

What do you like most about my writing style?

Your stories flow well, and you always seem to have a surprise or twist in most of them. The characters are either very lovable or I hate them—no in between..

What do you dislike about my writing style?

I wish some of the stories could be longer. I want to find out more about the character’s lives.

Who was your favorite character?

Obviously, the heroine in each short story; they have their weaknesses, but they always figure out a way to succeed!

Was there any particular character that you felt close to?

Yes, Brenda in Rape’s Revenge. She was dead bent on getting revenge, but her mother talked some sense into her.

Would you read more of my books?

Yes, absolutely.  After reading the Sneak Preview from Book 2, June’s Double Rainbow, I enjoyed it, and I was so happy for the heroine that I had tears of joy!

Is there anything you’d like to see in future novels?

I think I would like to see maybe a full-length novel, rather than a book of short stories. Just to satisfy my hunger for more of your writing.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with other potential readers?

This is definitely an author you need to read, I swear you will not want to put the book down until the last page. Cheryl’s stories entertain the reader  long after the book is finished. I’ve read five of her books and I can hardly wait to read more of her books.

If any other readers would like to discuss one or all of my books, please contact me.

Thanks again for your feedback, Ann, and for sharing your thoughts!

Cheryl Holloway Celebrates Veterans Day 2017

Veterans Day Celebrates the Service of All U.S. Military Veterans

“…We honor those who honored our country with its highest form of service:  You who once wore the uniform of our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard.  We owe you our thanks.  We owe you our respect.  And we owe you our freedom.”

                                                    ~Barack Obama, 44th U. S. President

If you know me, then you know that I am from a military family (several generations), and that I support the military all year long.  I am a firm believer…“Supporting Veterans Shouldn’t Only Happen on Veterans Day.”

Be reminded of the sacrifices military men and women in our country make and that for a combat veteran, the fight doesn’t end when the war does.

I think it’s critical that we’re giving back to our veterans. And remember that they need our help and recognition all year long, not just on Veterans Day.

So, there is no better way to appreciate veterans than to give back. If you can’t give back to them personally, give to an organization that supports veterans. Some organizations that help military vets and military families are Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion, Vietnam Vets of America and Wounded Warriors. A new organization seems to appear with each new generation of military vets. So, I’m asking that you do your best to support at least one organization.

Thanks Vets

On this Veterans Day I ask, “What have you been doing to support our troops?”

God Bless our men and women in service—their dedication will never be forgotten.                                                                   ~Cheryl Holloway

Happy Halloween

No tricks here, just some fun facts and short stories about Halloween

My fond Halloween memories with my girls when they were little was picking out their Halloween costumes, going out to trick-or-treat in the neighborhood, and watching “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ on television.

Here is a quick Halloween Quiz for you to read while munching on your favorite Halloween candy.

  1. When was the first Halloween greeting card made?
  2. Jack-o’-Lanterns were thought to have originated in what country?
  3. What was a popular Halloween candy? (It was the first penny candy to be individually wrapped for sale.)
  4. Are pumpkins any other color than orange?
  5. What do people typically “bob” for at Halloween parties?

Here’s a short Halloween Story to read.

A Haunted House © Cheryl Holloway

A chill engulfed my body the moment I entered the haunted house. Looking around the room, I felt bathed in darkness, as my thoughts began to drench me in fear. I saw a broken mirror and I looked in it, only to notice no image looking back at me. I could smell a burning candle and when I got close to it, I saw footprints on the ceiling. I reached out my hand to touch the candle, when suddenly a black cat jumped on me and I heard screaming. I don’t know if the screams were coming from me or someone else, but I ran for the door. My heart was beating faster and faster as I was trying to open the heavy, wooden front door, then someone touched me and said, “Happy Halloween.”

The End

Quiz Answers:

  1. Early 1900’s
  2. Ireland
  3. Tootsie rolls
  4. Yes, blue, green and white.
  5. Apples

Just a little Halloween Fun to make you smile while you are getting ready for NaNoWriMo.

Happy Halloween to all of my blog readers and fans.

Cheryl Holloway Suggests How to Improve Your Work In Progress

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

What should you do to improve your Work In Progress (WIP) after you’ve written the first draft?

Many writers would argue that the hardest part of writing is the first draft, while other writers say it is developing that work in progress. I agree with the later. With NaNoWriMo coming in a few hours, by the end of November you will have completed your first draft of 50,000 words.  And many new or beginning writers want to know what’s next?

Well, here is my suggestion. Try to find new ways to express yourself and your writing.

So, here are three action steps—they’re not easy, but they are doable:

  1. Have Action Steps for yourself, as the writer

Read and re-read your draft

Then, brainstorm some ideas to make it a better story/novel

  1. Have Action Steps for improving your work

Address a particular aspect of the WIP, such as imagining a love scene; re-imagining the plot; creating enough conflict to keep the reader turning the pages; creating those love/hate characters; creating emotional scenes where readers laugh or cry; and/or creating dialogue that reels readers right into the book.

  1. Have Action Steps for your second draft

Invite feedback from others, such as writer friends, beta-readers and personal friends

Let me know if these suggestions help you in writing your second draft.

If you like this blog post, share it with your friends  🙂
