Cheryl Holloway’s Personal Writing Thoughts for the New Year

Cheryl Holloway’s Personal Writing Thoughts for the New Year

Some of my fans and readers are on the One Year Book Plan. If you are you are, you should have written 8 pages or 2,000 words. Yay!

Some of my fans and readers are on the Write When You Can Plan, who tend to write most on weekends.

My thoughts are this, “I don’t care when or how much you write, as long as you write and you recognize that ‘Writers write.’”

Cheryl Holloway’s Personal Writing Thoughts

I firmly believe in My 3 P’s of Writing—passion, persistence, and practice. Here are my definitions:

Passion is a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.

Persistence is firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition.

Practice is repeated exercise in or performance of an activity or skill so as to acquire or maintain proficiency in it.

Writing can be a lonely situation.

My downfall of writing is that I am alone most of the time, but at least I’m in good company. Since I am an introvert, it doesn’t really matter to me. When I come up for air, I visit with my writer friends, family and others. I have a sign in my office that reads: I live in my own little world, but it’s okay…they know me here!

When all else fails…I am still a Writer!

To My Blog Friends…May you continue to read many blogs and remain a fan of my blog.

Cheryl Holloway Wishes You A Happy Labor Day Weekend for 2016

Labor Day_2016

Labor Day is always held on the first Monday of September. It was originally organized to celebrate various labor organizations in the United States, so it is distinctly an American holiday. Labor Day is generally considered the end of the summer and a last chance for family trips or outdoor events before fall and winter.

How Ironic…Amazon Bookstores

Banner Header_2016

       In My Opinion                                                         Expect Opinion

Amazon Store

How Ironic…Amazon Bookstores

Amazon was founded with the ambition of putting brick and mortar bookstores out of business. How ironic…Amazon is now opening its third brick and mortar bookstore—first, Seattle, then, San Diego and now, Portland.

In the last five years or so, they’ve driven Borders out of business, along with a lot of mom-and-pop/local bookstores. Barnes and Noble is the largest U.S. brick and mortar bookstore still in existence. Is Barnes and Noble in jeopardy, too? Who knows?

I heard that Amazon is planning to open even more brick and mortar bookstores. What is Amazon up to? Nobody really knows, but they are getting rich from writers and readers…is this a Monopoly® game? Should I pass Go and collect $200?

Well, I’m going to check out one of the Amazon bookstores.

I’m going to an Amazon brick and mortar bookstore on a scavenger hunt to find…a Cheryl Holloway book!

What’s your opinion on the topic?

Would I Still Write, If…

Banner Header_2016

Writing_Clip art

Would I still write, if I never got paid?

My answer is “Yes! I love writing and I write every single day. Why? Because writers write.”

If you honestly believed that you would write, if you never got paid, then you obviously have a passion, a talent, or a need to write. So, you must discipline yourself to write every day. Preferably at the same time each day and for the same amount of time daily.

If writing brings you happiness, go for it. You will find a way to pursue your happiness and you might even make a few dollars along the way.  I’ve been writing all of my life.

I acquired a love for books and writing at an early age. My mother bought me little Golden Books once a week when I was three years old.  These books were to keep me occupied while my mother was pre-occupied with my new brother. Since I could read, I started writing and drawing my own little books. So, the rest is history.

Then at fifteen years old, I won my first Writing Competition. I wrote the winning essay on Crime Prevention for a statewide contest in Indiana. (I still have the trophy.)

 Writing Trophy

During high school and college, I was on the Newspaper and Newsletter staff. After college, I started writing for the Government as a Technical Writer and later became a Writer/Editor. So, I can proudly say that I have been a writer all of my life.

I wrote for Military magazines and was also Managing Editor—Road and Recreation; Flying Safety; Nuclear Surety; and the Proceedings Magazine, the oldest Military magazine in history.

For years, I had a business writing resumes for clients. I also freelanced as a writer for many magazines and newspapers from coast-to-coast. I even dabbled in writing poetry from time-to-time. And I landed a prestige Intern job working at the Smithsonian Press.

Now, as a retired Writer/Editor, I teach writing workshops and lead writing retreats. But most of all I write books for myself and my readers. So, the ultimate writing decision for me now—I write a blog—about writing and books.  My two favorite things.

So, as you can see, I have had my fair share of writing throughout the years. I am not rich or famous, but I can honestly say that I love writing and I had a good writing career as a professional Writer/Editor.

So, would I still write, if I never got paid?

Yes, do what you love and the money will come.

Cheryl Holloway Wishes A Happy Father’s Day to All the Fans/Readers Near and Far

Banner Header_2016

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father’s Day to…all my family, friends and readers near and far!

May you enjoy today with your father and may all the father’s enjoy the day with their children and grandchildren.  Enjoy your many Blessings.

This year I’ve written a Father’s Day fictional short story. I hope you enjoy it.

Note: This short story is dedicated to my closest family members who served in various branches of the Military—my brother, William Holloway; my nephew (his son), Kenneth Holloway; my uncle, John McCaa, all former Military members. Deceased family members—my father, Willie Holloway;  my ex-husband, Samuel Robinson; and my uncle, George Britt.

A Military Father’s Day Gift

Kenny had been in the Army for almost ten years and was looking forward to leave on Father’s Day Weekend with his wife and kids.

A few days prior to the weekend, a terrorist gunman fired into a crowd of parade attendees and killed twenty people and wounded 15 other innocent bystanders. The terrorist disappeared after fleeing the location.

The military was called in to help the small state’s National Guard.  Kenny’s leave was cancelled.

His wife and kids were very disappointed, since they had planned a big family breakfast for him and other family members on Father’s Day Morning. Much to their frustration, the family decided to continue the celebration without Kenny.

Kenny and his squad were more determined than ever to find the terrorist…as soon as possible.  They were on a 24/7 mission. The squad finally located the terrorist on Friday morning. The terrorist was shot dead after a quick shootout.  Kenny and his squad felt good now that they had accomplished their mission.

The Commander lifted the leave restraint. Kenny called his wife and they decided to surprise everyone.

Kenny had been flying all night and was exhausted. But he got a new burst of energy and felt so blessed when he saw his wife, kids and family on Father’s Day Morning!

THE END

Flag and soldiers.

Happy Father’s Day to the Military.

I thank God for the many Blessings in my life. May you have a Happy & Blessed Father’s Day!

Why Cheryl Holloway Pays It Forward

Banner Header_2016

Pay it forward_clipart 2Pay It Forward Zone-page1

Pay it forward_Clipart 4

Why I Pay It Forward?

Fact: The concept of pay it forward is that one person can help spread kindness and joy to the world—one good deed at a time.

“I firmly believe Pay-It-Forward means that we must serve others in order to lift up ourselves.”                                                ~Cheryl Holloway

In the Pay-It-Forward spirit of gratitude, I pay-it-forward at least once a week (sometimes three times a week) by doing a good deed for someone else, preferably someone that I don’t know. In the beginning, I had such a hard time trying to get the word out about my books that I decided to help spread the word to my audience about other author’s books. I feature authors from all genres, but I also pay it forward globally to authors in other countries. As of the end of June 2016, I will pay-it-forward to authors in 43 countries.

Every year I have a Pay-It-Forward blog post. This year I want to explain Why I Pay-It-Forward. Here are the top five reasons I Pay-It-Forward:

  1. The focus is on other authors.
  2. I ask authors to pay it forward to any other author.
  3. Hopefully, it is a mutually shared joy.
  4. My pay it forward kindness often benefits others that I do not know.
  5. The #1 positive effect of my generosity and giving is that I feel good.

The idea of Pay-It-Forward is not to reciprocate me, but to pay it forward to someone else. So, it would be fair to conclude that good things will happen to the receiver and giver of generosity and kindness.

Of course, I wanted to make sure that I interviewed the originator of Pay-It-Forward and asked Catherine Ryan Hyde to be a Celebrity Guest Author on my blog. She agreed and the rest is history.

You can read Catherine Ryan Hyde’s interview here: http://www.cherylholloway.net/blog/2014/07/25/celebrity-guest-author-interview-catherine-ryan-hyde/

Last year, my blog post included 15 Ways An Author Can Pay It Forward, You can read the blog post here:

http://www.cherylholloway.net/blog/2015/04/30/cheryl-holloway-on-pay-it-forward-day-april-30-2015/

So, get in the pay-it-forward spirit, and pay-it-forward to someone…today!

A MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE TO OUR MILITARY HEROES

Memorial Day is the one holiday of the year when we are to remember and honor the men and women who are America’s Fallen Warriors.  It is not the official holiday for summer to begin; but it is a day of remembrance for our lost soldiers.

Today, I ask you to join me in remembering and honoring our family and friends who served in the Armed Forces and who lost their lives fighting to protect our homeland and our safety with their bravery and sacrifice.  There is a bevy of ceremonies, events and parades marking the occasion. Please take the time  to honor those who served.

I’m Proud to be An American/God Bless the USA

Happy Mother’s Day to…all my family, friends and readers near and far!

Every year I try to do something different for each holiday. This year I’ve written a Mother’s Day short story based on a true event. I hope you enjoy it.

A Mother’s Day Gift

An older couple in their forties, who desperately wanted children, had been trying to conceive for years. They had decided that this was their last time to try and if this didn’t work, they would adopt a child.  Finally, they were told that they were pregnant and the baby would be born around the middle of May. To their surprise, the couple was told they were having twins—a boy and a girl. The couple was elated.

The doctor told them it was a delicate pregnancy and she may have to be bedridden for a portion of the time. The couple decided to follow the doctor’s orders, as much as possible. The wife was so excited to finally becoming a stay-at-home mom. They were excitedly looking forward to the twin’s arrival. Their doctor told them that they might arrive early. The soon-to-be parents were so excited and didn’t really care when the twins were born, just that they would be healthy.

Surprise—the twins came a little early. What a Blessing—they arrived on Mother’s Day!

The End

I thank God for the many Blessings in my life. May you have a Happy & Blessed Mother’s Day!
