Cheryl Holloway Asks, “Have You Met Your Writing Goals for 2017?”

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

“Have You Met Your Writing Goals for 2017?”

Oh, no. You didn’t get that book written. And…you didn’t finish NaNoWriMo. You’ve fallen behind, and now, you’re beating yourself up…bad!

I know, you’re saying, “I missed my writing goals. I have no motivation. I can’t stay on a writing routine. Besides, it’s almost the end of the year. Why bother? I will do better next year.”

But…Why wait? Let’s get started now and you’ll be ahead of the writing game. You’ll be ready for those 2018 Writing Goals. No more excuses!

Three Simple Tips:

  1. Focus on 1 or 2 Writing Goals.
  2. Create a Simple Action Plan.
  3. Reward Yourself when you Finish a Weekly Goal.

My Suggestion: Instead of writing the whole book, try writing the outline for the book and maybe just writing the first chapter by December 31st with weekly goals that are doable. The rewards can be simple also, like buying that writing book at the used bookstore or a café latte at Starbucks ®.

Be grateful and thankful for what little progress you’ve made. After all, these are baby steps towards making your big goal happen!

Another Simple Tip to Stay on Track:

I would also suggest finding a writing buddy, who you are accountable to them and they are accountable to you. You will keep each other on track for your overall writing goals.

Get started today, don’t wait until January 1st!

If you like this blog post, share it with your friends. 🙂

Cheryl Holloway Presents A Reader’s Interview

Google News          Fox News Logo

A Reader’s Interview

I love getting to know my readers, so I put together a Reader’s Interview, so I can learn more about my readers and get their feedback on my current and future books. Ann, a devoted reader of my blog, was kind enough to allow me to share her thoughts with you, so here it is:

Which of my books is your favorite?

I loved the Cougar Tales Box Set, especially Jamaican Love. I also loved The Proposal: A Leap of Faith.  I might add, the ending took me by surprise. I recently read A Sisterhood of Women Living Life, Book 2. The preview story for Book 2, June’s Rainbow, was also a great story and I’m looking forward to more romance stories.

Which short story did you like most in A Sisterhood of Women Living Life?

All of the stories were a very exciting read, which keeps the reader attached to the story line until the last page. So, it would be hard to pick one story. But if I had to pick one, I’d say Dark Secrets and White Lies. It was a very unique story line.

What did you like least about that story?

I wanted it to go on, so I could know a little more about Maria’s future.

What do you like most about A Sisterhood of Women Living Life, Book 1?

Each story was very interesting and I felt like I knew the characters personally. I cried at times and yelled in victory at other times.

What do you like most about my writing style?

Your stories flow well, and you always seem to have a surprise or twist in most of them. The characters are either very lovable or I hate them—no in between..

What do you dislike about my writing style?

I wish some of the stories could be longer. I want to find out more about the character’s lives.

Who was your favorite character?

Obviously, the heroine in each short story; they have their weaknesses, but they always figure out a way to succeed!

Was there any particular character that you felt close to?

Yes, Brenda in Rape’s Revenge. She was dead bent on getting revenge, but her mother talked some sense into her.

Would you read more of my books?

Yes, absolutely.  After reading the Sneak Preview from Book 2, June’s Double Rainbow, I enjoyed it, and I was so happy for the heroine that I had tears of joy!

Is there anything you’d like to see in future novels?

I think I would like to see maybe a full-length novel, rather than a book of short stories. Just to satisfy my hunger for more of your writing.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with other potential readers?

This is definitely an author you need to read, I swear you will not want to put the book down until the last page. Cheryl’s stories entertain the reader  long after the book is finished. I’ve read five of her books and I can hardly wait to read more of her books.

If any other readers would like to discuss one or all of my books, please contact me.

Thanks again for your feedback, Ann, and for sharing your thoughts!

CH: Thank you so much, Ann, for taking time out of your very busy schedule to join me and my blog followers and discuss my books that you’ve read.  And readers, if you would enjoy one of my books.  I suggest you pick up a copy at your earliest convenience.  And don’t forget to write a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads.

Cheryl Holloway Celebrates Veterans Day 2017

Veterans Day Celebrates the Service of All U.S. Military Veterans

“…We honor those who honored our country with its highest form of service:  You who once wore the uniform of our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard.  We owe you our thanks.  We owe you our respect.  And we owe you our freedom.”

                                                    ~Barack Obama, 44th U. S. President

If you know me, then you know that I am from a military family (several generations), and that I support the military all year long.  I am a firm believer…“Supporting Veterans Shouldn’t Only Happen on Veterans Day.”

Be reminded of the sacrifices military men and women in our country make and that for a combat veteran, the fight doesn’t end when the war does.

I think it’s critical that we’re giving back to our veterans. And remember that they need our help and recognition all year long, not just on Veterans Day.

So, there is no better way to appreciate veterans than to give back. If you can’t give back to them personally, give to an organization that supports veterans. Some organizations that help military vets and military families are Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion, Vietnam Vets of America and Wounded Warriors. A new organization seems to appear with each new generation of military vets. So, I’m asking that you do your best to support at least one organization.

Thanks Vets

On this Veterans Day I ask, “What have you been doing to support our troops?”

God Bless our men and women in service—their dedication will never be forgotten.                                                                   ~Cheryl Holloway

Cheryl Holloway Wishes Everyone A Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween

No tricks here, just some fun facts and short stories about Halloween

My fond Halloween memories with my girls when they were little was picking out their Halloween costumes, going out to trick-or-treat in the neighborhood, and watching “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ on television.

Here is a quick Halloween Quiz for you to read while munching on your favorite Halloween candy.

  1. When was the first Halloween greeting card made?
  2. Jack-o’-Lanterns were thought to have originated in what country?
  3. What was a popular Halloween candy? (It was the first penny candy to be individually wrapped for sale.)
  4. Are pumpkins any other color than orange?
  5. What do people typically “bob” for at Halloween parties?

Here’s a short Halloween Story to read.

A Haunted House © Cheryl Holloway

A chill engulfed my body the moment I entered the haunted house. Looking around the room, I felt bathed in darkness, as my thoughts began to drench me in fear. I saw a broken mirror and I looked in it, only to notice no image looking back at me. I could smell a burning candle and when I got close to it, I saw footprints on the ceiling. I reached out my hand to touch the candle, when suddenly a black cat jumped on me and I heard screaming. I don’t know if the screams were coming from me or someone else, but I ran for the door. My heart was beating faster and faster as I was trying to open the heavy, wooden front door, then someone touched me and said, “Happy Halloween.”

The End

Quiz Answers:

  1. Early 1900’s
  2. Ireland
  3. Tootsie rolls
  4. Yes, blue, green and white.
  5. Apples

Just a little Halloween Fun to make you smile while you are getting ready for NaNoWriMo.

Happy Halloween to all of my blog readers and fans.

Cheryl Holloway Suggests How to Improve Your Work In Progress

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

What should you do to improve your Work In Progress (WIP) after you’ve written the first draft?

Many writers would argue that the hardest part of writing is the first draft, while other writers say it is developing that work in progress. I agree with the later. With NaNoWriMo coming in a few hours, by the end of November you will have completed your first draft of 50,000 words.  And many new or beginning writers want to know what’s next?

Well, here is my suggestion. Try to find new ways to express yourself and your writing.

So, here are three action steps—they’re not easy, but they are doable:

  1. Have Action Steps for yourself, as the writer

Read and re-read your draft

Then, brainstorm some ideas to make it a better story/novel

  1. Have Action Steps for improving your work

Address a particular aspect of the WIP, such as imagining a love scene; re-imagining the plot; creating enough conflict to keep the reader turning the pages; creating those love/hate characters; creating emotional scenes where readers laugh or cry; and/or creating dialogue that reels readers right into the book.

  1. Have Action Steps for your second draft

Invite feedback from others, such as writer friends, beta-readers and personal friends

Let me know if these suggestions help you in writing your second draft.

If you like this blog post, share it with your friends  🙂

Celebrate Indie Author Day on October 14th

The public is encouraged to attend and meet dozens of local indie authors, poets, and graphic novelists, and to discover new talent. Authors in your area  will be selling their books at various sites for readers to pick up their next favorite book.

As an Indie Author, I understand how difficult it can be to promote the great books that independent authors write and work so hard to share with the rest of the world.  So on today, find an indie author in your area and support them. Some will be at libraries and others will be at book events, but here is just another way for ‘indies’ to get the recognition we deserve at local libraries and events.

Ted Olczak, “A book without an audience is like not having a book at all.”

Six Things You Need to Make Your Book a Best Seller by Cheryl Holloway

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

Six Things You Need to Make Your Book a Best Seller

These techniques will work on any kind of book: fiction: romance, mystery, sci-fi, urban fantasy, thriller, etc.; or non-fiction: business or literary work. Any writer can implement these techniques no matter where you are in your writing process, from the first draft to the polished final draft.

  1. A Well-written Book
  2. A Positive Attitude
  3. Inspiration
  4. Motivation
  5. Determination
  6. Target Audience

A Well-written Book – Tell a wonderful story to make readers love you (Fiction). Provide useful information that readers can use (Non-fiction).

Hint: Pull on their emotions—make them laugh or make them cry.

A Positive Attitude – Do not underestimate the power of positive thinking when it comes to your writing. Learn and know your craft by building and enhancing your skills and developing your resources. As a writer, you must build and maintain a positive attitude. Don’t worry about rejections or negative feedback.

Hint: Everyone is not going to like your book.

Inspiration (definition) – the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative (such as writing). Find your inspiration and let it lead you on to better writing. It will also lead you from being a writer to being an author. What inspires most people is “an ordinary person who has done an extraordinary thing.”

Hint: Whether your inspiration is someone or something; big or small; let it lead you on to better writing.

Motivation – According to Writer’s Digest magazine, “Writing takes commitment, self-discipline, and desire.” My passion for writing is my motivation. What’s yours?

Hint: Find a quote about writing and put it near your PC or laptop where you can always glance at it.

My Two Favorite Quotes: 1) I live in my own little world. But it’s okay…they know me here! 2) If there is a book you want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it. Toni Morrison

Determination (definition) – a firmness of purpose; resoluteness. As a writer with a mission, you need an unflinching determination. You have goals and deadlines to meet—go for it.

Hint: Don’t give up! No matter what.

Target Audience – The Bible is the only book that is for everyone (and some people will question that). Know who should read your book: What type of people? (Christians, entrepreneurs, etc.) What type of groups? (shoppers, smokers, children, baby boomers, young adults, etc.) What other books do they read? (romance, sci-fi, urban, etc.) Know their demographics: age, income, education, race, gender, marital status, and/or occupation

Hint: Learn as much about your target audience as possible.

I am determined to make one of my books a best seller. I promote my books each and every day. It’s only a matter of time for me…how about you?

Cheryl Holloway Says, “How Important Are Book Reviews?”

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

“How Important Are Book Reviews?”

I firmly believe book reviews are an essential part of reading a book.

What does it mean to review a book?

According to the internet, A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on content, style, and merit. A book review may be a primary source, opinion piece, or summary review.

As an author, book reviews are the first thing I look at on Amazon. They tell me about my writing—overall. Reviews are an important way of getting the word out about books, and for authors, reviews are the much needed feedback about their work—encouragement from others. It is a validation of an author’s hard work—a validation by readers, fans, peers and friends/family.

I think, book reviewers have a different perspective on writing reviews. For them, it is an exercise in thinking about an author’s words and how she/he organized them and presented those words to the world.

I recently released one of my eBooks as a print book, A Sisterhood of Women Living Life: A Short Story Collection Book 1. I’ve sold several copies of the book and I encourage readers to stop by Amazon and leave a book review. I read somewhere that only 5% of readers write a review. I find that 1 in 250 readers write a review for the average author. However, for a celebrity author, they are knocking down the door to write a book review. How ironic, those are the very authors who don’t need a review. Oh, well…

On the other hand, many of my readers email me to tell me how much they enjoyed my books. This is wonderful, but no one sees their comments but me and them.

Recently, a friend, since I was 16 years old, finally read one of my books. (I have nine books on Amazon.) She said, “Wow, I didn’t know that you were such a great writer and story teller. Your book is wonderful. I’ve read it three times in a three days.” It is a stellar review.

So, how can I encourage the readers to tell me and tell the world about my books?

I’m so excited because September is a very special month for me. It is the blog anniversary—blogaversary of the Cheryl Holloway Blog—this year is the Fourth Anniversary!

I am so very happy about my decision to start writing this blog. It has allowed me to connect with many, many people—writers and readers—from around the world. Last year, we celebrated with an all day virtual blog party.  It was FUN.

It has been a pleasure over the past four years of providing author interviews with Cheryl Holloway, offering great books to read, and valuable writing tips. I’ve had international authors from 67 countries—all over the world!

I never thought that I would learn so much about blogging, but it has been a really great experience. There have been 700+ posts and hundreds of authors featured. I am happy to say, “The Cheryl Holloway blog will continue to be a reality and I will pay it forward to as many authors as possible. We will see what happens in the years to come.”

Cheryl Holloway Wishes You A Happy 2017 Labor Day Weekend

Google News          Fox News Logo

Labor Day is always held on the first Monday of September. It was originally organized to celebrate various labor organizations in the United States, so it is distinctly an American holiday. Labor Day is generally considered the end of the summer and a last chance for family trips or outdoor events before fall and winter.

Once again, my summer flew by and I am doing what I love most—writing!

Working tirelessly is something most of us do every day. Take this opportunity to feel very proud for your hard work.

To all of you, I wish you have a Happy Labor Day Weekend.Signature Logo

Seven Sentence Sunday with Cheryl Holloway

Seven Sentence Sunday

Once Upon a Time

Most of my blog readers and followers enjoy Seven Sentence Sunday and often request the short stories.

I write a short story using only seven sentences. I also use this as a writing exercise in the writing workshops that I present.

I’m in the process of trying to move/relocate. Well, this week has been a real dilemma for me or rather an eye-opening situation. We cleaned out the garage and shed, and next is the basement.

So, here is my epiphany.

Title: Baby Boomer Breakthrough

Whether it is decluttering, downsizing or just moving…dejunking is hard!

I’ve accumulated a lot of objects or furniture over time.

I’m holding on to STUFF out of a sense of obligation to the past,

I finally realized I have to let go to create a peaceful and stress-free space for myself.

I have to donate it, sell it, put it on consignment, or just give it away.

It’s so easy to accumulate and soooo hard to get rid of, but…

I have to just let go!

The End

Keep in mind that this is my perspective. 🙂

Cheryl Holloway’s Advice for Developing Good Writing Habits

Banner Header_2016

Google News          Fox News Logo

Did you know that 82% of the people say that they want to write a book, but only 2% actually write a book?

I am an Accountability Writing Coach and today, we are discussing advice that I give to my clients and the students in my Creative Writing Classes.

  1. Be A Winner When Setting Your Goals

You must set goals you can easily achieve. I set weekly goals.

Start out with a simple goal: Within One Week I will… Example: Within One Week, I will write the outline for my fiction book.

As you progress you can make bigger, smarter goals. Years ago, I learned about S.M.A.R.T. Goals. (I can’t remember who to give the credit to, but I didn’t come up with this idea.) These goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Bound. Example of a SMART Goal: I will write the first chapter of book title with 1,500 words by December 15, 2017.

You want to be successful in reaching your writing goals. I would rather that you write 250 words a day and reach your goal, than strive for 1,000 words a day and never reach your goal. Now, if you write 479 words today and only 251 words tomorrow that is okay, because you still reached your daily goal of 250 words. Note: I advise you not to end your writing session until you have achieved your goal. And that is why a smaller goal is better than a big/fast goal…like writing a book in 30 days. Yes, it can be done, but are you the one to do it.

Remember: A successful author set goals (and deadlines-another blog post).

  1. Be Diligent in Managing Your Writing Time

Did you know that when you write something down, you are 42% more likely to make it happen?

Ask yourself: How often will I write? How long will I write? And then write your goals down.

You must be very specific with yourself about the time you will commit to writing, especially if you want to go from a writer to an author. You must write on a regular schedule—write every day at the same time. Whether it is early morning, late night, or all day, the key is to be consistent in your daily writing. If you need help, keep a chart of daily writing times.

Remember: Writers write.

Month Day Word Goal Words Written
August 1 250 250
2 250 593
3 250 649
4 250 255
5 250 407
6 250 1,528
7 250 1,751

3. Be a Finisher and Complete Your Draft

Ask yourself. What type of writer am I? Am I a pantser? Am I a planner?

A pantser makes the story up as they go along. A planner plots the story, usually with an outline.

Regardless of what type of writer you are, you need to completely finish writing the entire first draft, before you start self-editing!

Remember: A carpenter doesn’t polish the table before he attaches the legs.

Every writer wants to become a successful author.

Remember: Alice Walker, Walter Mosley, Danielle Steel, James Patterson, Nora Roberts and Stephen King were not an overnight success—it took years for them to reach that status.

I hope this short blog post helped you better understand developing good writing habits.
