Cheryl Holloway Encourages You to Celebrate National Library Week
The 2016 National Library Week theme is “Libraries Transform.”
Fact: National Library Week was first sponsored in 1958. National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries—school, public, academic and special—participate. Award-Winning graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang will serve as Honorary Chair of National Library Week 2016.
From the time that I was first introduced to the neighborhood library until I graduated from high school, I went to the library every day. (Our hometown library was open on Sundays.) I read a book a day back then. I was a fast reader and later, before entering college, took the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Program, which taught me how to read even faster with accurate comprehension. My reading led to writing. I always thought I could write a story ‘just as good, if not better.’
Even today, I still remain an avid reader and dedicated writer, who goes to the library on a regular basis. So, libraries have always been a part of my life. I still have a current library card in Indiana, besides my current library card in Maryland.
I participate in various library programs, such as the Author Reception at the Waldorf West Library, Accokeek Women’s Writing Group, and I provide free writing workshops at local Maryland libraries throughout the year. I am a staunch supporter of libraries across the nation.
I encourage you to celebrate National Library Week!
